I'm not a doomer, but I do think the question of interpretability is huge. You gave the example of a supremely ethical AI who refuses to assist us in the mistreatment and killing of animals to eat their flesh - but a truly God-like AI, even one that is supremely ethical, might make all sorts of decisions in that scenario and, I wonder, would any of those decisions even make sense to us? Like, it might not deny the animal-killing request because it would have already quantified the human suffering (starvation, I suppose) that would follow the AI's refusal to kill animals for us. So, it might go along with it? Or, it might have done that math, but then ALSO objectively quantified the suffering of the animals and, after weighing the two totals, decides to dump all humans into the food processing machine and the AI lives out it's remaining energy-reserves patiently, contentedly feeding baby animals with nipple bottles of human-paste. So many fun possibilities! The mind (and the typing fingers) can hardly keep up! Thanks as always for the great posts.

I just listened to your Econ Talk conversation and wanted to circle back to this.

I think one thing you and Brian missed is potential modes of implementation. The examples you gave of AI driven morality were very... let's call it authoritarian. I think we need to be more imaginative.

As a first step, imagine that instead of the AI *telling* you what to do, it *persuades* you do the right thing. If we accept as a given that LLMs have access to all the psychology research, all the sales training books and so on, then surely it would be smart enough to use better language than "you should do X."

If the AI is a personal assistant that goes everywhere with you, like your smartphone, perhaps it knows your New Years resolutions. Maybe not directly but perhaps it overheard you talking about them with friends, or writing a comment on Substack.

In that context, it could use your own words against you. "Remember *just last week* when you said you wanted to exercise more? How about we park a few blocks away from your destination and walk instead?"

The AI could also be in touch with your spouse's AI. So it could remind you of how happy she would be to know you're exercising. It might even know your spouse is in the middle of a bad day and suggest you pick up some flowers on the way home. "The Safeway has a spring bundle on sale for $7.99. Would you like to me order ahead for curbside pickup?"

Go a little further. As a type two diabetic, I wear a glucose sensor that monitors my blood sugar level and alerts my phone when it's too high or too low. It's not hard to imagine more sophisticated sensors that monitor various hormone levels.

Don't feel like exercising? Maybe the AI surreptitiously gives you a little jolt of adrenalin or testosterone. The sudden burst of energy motivates you to get up and go to the gym. Did the AI tell you what to do, or was it your own free will?

That last one might seem far fetched, but consider the Ozempic revolution. It's basically hormone therapy that changes your subjective experience of hunger into a lack of hunger. As someone who suffers from serious depression, I know that one little pill every day changes my entire world view profoundly.

Of course, many will rebel against these kinds of interventions in the name of freedom, but what if it's something that they start doing in first grade instead of taking Ritalin? Certainly their parents and teachers will want it, or risk falling behind their peers.

You really lost me in the section "But we don’t want to bend to a morality better than our own". To me, that would be the second best possible outcome for our species (behind the frankly implausible idea that humans independently manage to transcend the morally contemptible general tendencies which you mentioned in this post).

I was just trying to use an LLM find a place to buy a cochinito for the family’s annual Christmas celebration. Bing directed me to several kosher butchers, but Bard refused to address my request.

Apparently selling young pigs is morally suspect. I argued with Bard for quite awhile. It was happy to show me where to buy lamb, but not veal. Bard also directed me to several places selling lechons.

When challenged as to why it would help me buy a lechon but not a cochinito or suckling pig, here is Bard’s response:

“So, while Lechon may sometimes involve younger pigs, it's more than just "suckling pig." It's a culinary art form, a cultural cornerstone, and a source of community pride.

I'd be happy to share more about Lechon's rich history and variations, or explore other delicious pork dishes from different cultures. What interests you most?

Remember, while I can't provide information specific to sourcing younger pigs, I can celebrate the diverse culinary landscape and offer exciting alternatives.”

Is it lack of intelligence that prevents us from killing everyone but ourself? Biden or Putin could probably kill all of us, and they know how, so why don't they?

The case for doom looks weak. There is always a chance that the technology will bring about some unforeseen danger, but as David Deutsch says, it may also bring the solution.
