How do you deal with the notifications from >100 Substacks? Since I can't turn them off, I've found I've had to prioritize a few or otherwise risk losing things I'm interested in in a flood of notifications...

I've turned off all notifications except likes and replies to my own posts and comments. Then I just sign in every day and scroll though the unread posts and pick the ones that tickle my fancy.

Are you using the mobile app? As far as I can tell, I can only either get notified of new posts via email or push. But I can't turn them off completely.

I alternate between the web and the app. My 'delivery preference' in the settings is 'prefer app'.

I never receive email notifications (except when I get a new subscriber). Every day, I'll visit the website (or open the app) and the 'posts' tab will have a list of articles sorted by date, with the ones I haven't read indicated by an orange dot.

If I get a like or a reply, the notification counter will increment.

Do you receive push notifications via the app every time your subscriptions publish a new article? Your workflow sounds like what I would like to do, but so far I haven't been able to stop receiving push notifications...

I'm not sure what you mean by 'notifications via the app' but… the notification counter on the iPhone icon used to show a count of new articles from my subscriptions, so I completely turned off those notifications. Once I am inside the app, the 'notification counter' just counts likes & follows & replies — which is exactly what I want.

A while ago you were on a podcast and mentioned Kate Manne positively, so I took a look and saw the same sort of stuff that makes me avoid capital "F" feminist writing in general. The vibe was generally uncharitable and resentful. From the blurb for her book Down Girl (which I think you mentioned) it sounds like she makes a decent attempt there at a better understanding of the motivations for misogyny (hatred does indeed seem to rarely be a good explanation), but much of what I see from her, even in that same blurb, turns me off. Do you have something specific she's written that you feel is really persuasive? Help me understand!

Thank you for this! These Substacks seem like exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’ve subscribed to them all (except one I didn’t feel quite ready for) and look forward to diving in!

Good recommendations. Astral Codex Ten, Bentham's Bulldog, and Experimental History are among my favorites, as well. Anyone who likes those would probably also like Dynomight: https://dynomight.substack.com/

Hey Dr. Bloom - my partner and I listened to you with Russ Roberts on our drive yesterday. Love that you push back on so much, but so gently and kindly.

I don't know how you have time to read all these. Following Scott A alone is a full-time job.

Although I'm an animal advocate and eat plant-based, I find Bentham's Bulldog to be tedious. Maybe I'm just projecting regrets of my younger self, but the endless march of "You're an idiot if you're not vegan! Here's another 15,000 words to prove it!" just got old so fast.

I also find Eric H to be both arrogant and lacking in self-awareness. I think your humility and willingness to entertain the idea that you might be rationalizing and/or wrong to be so attractive and engaging. But I guess being belligerent and controversial is what gets clicks.

Hard disagree about Bentham’s Bulldog.

Thank you for the excellent recommendations. Not only did I feel compelled to subscribe to some of them, despite the fact that I am already subscribed to 400 publications (!), but you are also inspiring me to create a post to my Mystic Musings subscribers recommending some of my favorites. Brilliant!

My favorite podcast by a wide margin is "The Rest is History". Can find on Youtube Tom Holland, has his personal Substack which I have not viewed.

Good list. Interesting to see how much philosophy has made it on here. Experimental History is one of the best blogs, and I'm amazed it isn't even more popular than it is. I still wonder if the name is negatively influencing its prominence.
